Topwater

Cool mornings allow for exquisite top water fishing. I love waking up to cool weather especially when you have water that you can walk to. There is something about a cool wind in your face, a rod in your hand and the sun rising beside you, warmth and Coolness all in the same realm. Call me sentimental.

Boom, Fly sinks, Water Splashes, Fish starts fighting. Good morning Self. Breakfast time.

Sunday Morning Flies

Sneaky Pete

Illustration: Jonathon M. Powell

A superb surface fly or popper fly to strip along the surface of the water to get big strikes from bass or pike. Give this popper fly a strip so it dips into the water, then let it rest. Strip it again. Fish love these flies. Everything from the rubber leg movement to the sound attracts fish. A great fly for fly fishing ponds and lakes for warm water species.

I catch a lot of fish with these bugs !

Evening Quil Gordon

Quill Gordon- Dry Fly

Illustration: Jonathon M. Powell

The Quill Gordon is one of the earliest eastern mayfly hatches in the spring. The flies hatch on the bottom and rise as fully formed adults, working on the surface to dry their wings and fly. The Quill Gordon dry fly has not changed since originated by Theodore Gordon in the Catskills. Skittering the dry fly a bit can improve production as the mayfly often makes multiple attempts to fly before it finally breaks free. The Gordon dry fly is a true classic.
